There’s plenty to do, but the resort is also ideal for those who simply want to relax with the sand between their toes or soak up the sun beside the swimming pool. For the adventurous, it’s a few dozen steps from the beach to the reef, a snorkeler’s paradise as well as a great spot to fish for Trevally Jack and Grouper.

Farther out, famous WW2 wrecks attract scuba divers, while fun-lovers can rent jet skis from the hotel for a hour or more of excitement. Visit nearby folksy villages and markets drenched in local colour, traditional Hindu temples, the Dutch fort at nearby Batticaloa, and ancient Polonnaruwa with its giant Buddha statues and thirteenth-century ruins that are reminiscent of Angkor.
