Featured Destinations

Indeed, when people think of tourist destinations there are a number of iconic sites that come to mind. The blue domes of Santorini, the vibrant lights of Times Square and the iconic Sydney Opera House are just a few examples of attractions that have attracted countless tourists in recent times. Of course, those also looking for a stay of supreme luxury will often opt to stay at well-known luxury hotels including the Four Seasons and the Ritz Carlton. While these destinations are undeniable fascinating and these hotels offer exceptional luxury, what about those who want to find an experience off the beaten track? Places relatively undiscovered far away from the mass tourist crowds? That is exactly why we have compelled a list of hidden gems not to be missed across a range of destinations. From relatively undiscovered destinations to unique hotels, our list will inspire you to embark on a holiday truly off the beaten path.

Destinations

Indian Ocean - Seychelles

Of course, Mauritius and the Maldives are undeniably idyllic destinations in the Indian Ocean but with their increasing popularity they are seeing more visitors each year. Last year both of these destinations welcomed more than 1 million tourists while the Seychelles welcomed less than 400,000. And what does this mean? Fewer people on the beaches and a more authentic experience of course. The Seychelles is an archipelago of 115 stunningly beautiful islands in the heart of the Indian Ocean, 400km northwest of Madagascar, and is the best kept secret of the Indian Ocean. Deserted, pristine, dazzling-white beaches framed by granite boulders, shimmering turquoise lagoons, swaying emerald coconut palms, warm tropical breezes, lush forests and stunningly colourful underwater life await tourists. The islands are separated into two categories: inner granite islands which form the backbone of its tourist offering with their wide suite of services and amenities, and the more remote outer coral islands where tourists should at least spend one night of their stay. Each of the islands are unique and exhibit an individual charm, personality and atmosphere of their own, and guests visiting the Seychelles will want to visit as many as possible. Don’t miss the chance to travel to the Seychelles while it is still relatively undiscovered and experience an authentic and serene escape in the Indian Ocean.

Caribbean - Anguilla

Certainly, Anguilla is a destination that is often overlooked in the Caribbean due to its more famous counterparts including Barbados and St Lucia. This hidden treasure is tucked away in the eastern Caribbean and is only 25km long and just 3km wide at its widest point, but don’t let its small size fool you! This island is home to 33 pristine silky white sand beaches which many argue to the best in the Caribbean. Be sure to visit Little Bay, a secluded beach only accessible via boat and is a true hidden haven, perfect for swimming, snorkeling, or simply relaxing on its pristine sands. Indeed, something which makes Anguilla so appealing is the spirit of the people who live there who are always proud, warm and welcoming. Commonly referred to as the culinary capital of the Caribbean, the cuisine on this island will certainly not disappoint. From 5 star dining to BBQ stands and food vans, Anguilla has it all. Those looking to experience the authentic flavours of the island must try the national dish of Anguilla which is loved by locals and popular throughout the Caribbean: Pigeon Peas and Rice. Also, experience the island’s nightlife at one of the many beach bars which serve small plates and delicious cocktails as well as many featuring dance floors with a variety of music ranging from rock to reggae. What’s more, with seven dedicated marine parks, excellent bird watching and fabulous flora and fauna, this is a paradise for nature lovers. Avoid the crowds of the popular islands and discover a new underappreciated Caribbean escape at Anguilla where a world of unparalleled beauty and charm await.

USA/Canada - Nova Scotia

When people think of Canada they most likely think about its most well-known vibrant cities of Vancouver and Toronto, and the breathtaking landscape of the Canadian Rockies. One place that is often overlooked – but certainly shouldn’t be – is Nova Scotia. Situated to the south east of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia features a delightful blend of natural beauty, history and culture and is home to six UNESCO designated sites as well as two UNESCO supported sites. The capital city of this province is Halifax, and while it is nowhere near the size of Vancouver or Toronto, it certainly makes up for it with its charm. This seaside city is scattered with red-brick heritage buildings, excellent museums, public parks, a landmark citadel and a gorgeous waterfront boardwalk. The boardwalk stretches for almost 4 kilometres and is one of the most-visited destinations in the whole of Nova Scotia. Wander along the boardwalk and browse in boutique shops, dine in one of the waterfront restaurants and try one of Nova Scotia’s famous lobster dishes, or enjoy a harbour tour. Another highlight of Nova Scotia is the beautiful town of Lunenburg. This town features an Old Town which is one of only two urban communities in North America designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has managed to preserve 70% of the original colonial buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. Also not to be missed is a visit to the Cape Breton Highlands National Park with a drive along the famous Cabot Trail. This 298km highway weaves throughout the park, offering incredible valley and coastal views along the way.

Arabia - Ajman

Indeed, Dubai has become the tourist hotspot of Arabia in recent years. This city may offer some iconic attractions, including the world’s tallest building the Burj Khalifa, but if you’re looking for a more traditional and authentic side to the United Arab Emirates then Ajman is the place to go. This may be the smallest state of the UAE at just 260 square kilometres but it will certainly not disappoint. This region’s culture is steeped in exceptional hospitality and is a place where tourists are warmly welcomed by the locals. Ajman city offers something to tempt all travellers from beaches and mangroves to malls and museums. Experience the local culture as you barter in the souqs, visit a dhow-building yard, or watch a camel race. Also be sure to escape the city and head to Al Manama, a quiet farming inland enclave with the Hajar Mountains as its backdrop. Just an hour’s drive from the city, this enclave is perfect for nature lovers with its scenic surroundings scattered with Acacia, ghaf and flowering sidr and simr trees, while history lovers can visit its three historic fortresses. Alternatively, visit the inland enclave of Masfout which features a rocky landscape and a cooler temperature due to its elevated altitude makes it perfect for walking, hiking and mountain biking. The Hajar Mountains cradle this region and being just a 90 minute drive from the city makes it easily accessible.
