From gorgeous coastal drives to misty highland highways and lonesome country backroads, a self-drive in Tasmania has it all. This island state may be modest in size, but it’s wealth of attractions should never be underestimated.

Itinerary

place DAY 1 - Hobart

Hobart

Arrive in Hobart, renowned as the smallest of Australia’s capital cities, and pick up your hire car at the airport. Make your way to your hotel for the night.

place DAYS 2 - 3 - Freycinet National Park

Freycinet National Park

Enjoy a scenic drive as you leave the city behind and head towards Tasmania’s east coast and the beautiful Freycinet National Park. With water, mountain and bushland views, your accommodation promises an immersive luxury stay in nature.

Spend day three exploring the park, renowned for its dramatic pink granite peaks, pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters. There’s a history to the land here too, and Aboriginal sites are found throughout the park.

place DAYS 4 - 5 - Launceston

Launceston

Head north, driving along the coast towards the charming coastal town of Bicheno, where you might want to make a stop to visit the Bicheno Blowhole or stretch your legs with a walk on the beach. Continue along the shore before turning inland and driving through lush farmland and forest. As you get nearer to Launceston, the Midland Highway takes you through the picturesque Northern Midlands with its quaint, historic towns.

On arrival in Launceston, drive to your hotel for a two night stay. The city offers a glimpse into Tasmania’s past with Georgian and Victorian architecture and heritage streets. In the heart of the city, Cataract Gorge is a major draw, with its scenic walking trails and lovely gardens.

place DAYS 6 - 7 - Cradle Mountain

Cradle Mountain

Drive to Cradle Mountain today, a journey that takes around two and a half to three hours depending on stops.

Take a break in one of the small towns and villages en route or pause to appreciate the views as you drive. On arrival check in to your hotel for a two night stay.

place DAY 8 - Strahan

Strahan

Depart Cradle Mountain and travel to the Murchison Highway, driving past the towns of Tullah, Roseberry and Zeehan to reach Strahan. The town of Zeehan is rich in both history and minerals, having seen the discovery of silver and lead in 1882. Make a short stop to visit the historic buildings on Main Street, including the West Coast Pioneers Memorial Museum.

On arrival in Strahan, renowned as the gateway to Southwest National Park, go for a stroll in one of the world’s most beautiful cool climate rainforests. One of the most popular activities in Strahan is a cruise on the Gordon River, during which you might be able to see historic Macquarie Harbour and Sarah Island, one of Australia’s oldest convict settlements.

place DAY 9 - Hobart

Hobart

Leave Strahan via the Lyell Highway, travelling past the towns of Derwent Bridge, Lawrenny and Granton to reach Hobart.
